From condition check to your first waves

Your First Dreamland Surf Lesson: What to Expect

A first Dreamland lesson begins before you enter the water. Hendra checks the day’s peaks, shorebreak, current, wind and usable space, then chooses a practice zone and lesson structure that match your ability.

Before the lesson: confirm the real plan

When you enquire, share whether you have surfed before, how confidently you swim, the number of people and your preferred date. A label such as “beginner” is useful, but details help Hendra decide whether Dreamland is likely to fit.

The current service structure lists two-hour coaching sessions. Before travelling, confirm the exact time, what you should bring and any equipment arrangement through the Dreamland surf lesson page or WhatsApp.

Step 1: Hendra reads the beach

Dreamland can contain several different waves at once. The coach watches how the largest sets break, which channel is moving, where swimmers enter and whether the shorebreak complicates the exit. This check is more important than following a fixed clock time.

If no section provides a useful margin, the responsible decision is to wait or use another beach. A location change is part of local service, not a failed lesson.

Step 2: choose the board and practice zone

The board should match the surfer’s size and control needs. Any provided equipment should be confirmed directly because inclusions can change. The coach then identifies a boundary: where to wait, which direction to travel and where not to drift.

A complete beginner normally starts in manageable broken waves. A developing surfer may use a softer green peak after demonstrating controlled paddling, stopping and safe awareness around other people.

Step 3: beach briefing and pop-up

Safety first

Expect guidance on carrying the board, protecting your head during a fall, keeping hold of the board when safe, and avoiding the area directly in front of another surfer. Entry and exit points are explained before the first attempt.

A simple, repeatable pop-up

The coach checks hand position, foot placement and a balanced stance. The aim is not a perfect athletic movement on land; it is a sequence simple enough to repeat after paddling.

Direction and signals

Dreamland’s open beach can make voices harder to hear. Agree on hand signals and understand whether the planned wave should be ridden straight, left or right.

Step 4: coached waves

In the water, Hendra positions the board, identifies suitable waves and gives one correction at a time. Early attempts may focus on looking forward and holding a stable stance. As control improves, the surfer can paddle more independently.

An intermediate session is different. The coach may focus on take-off position, choosing between left and right, trimming, speed and turn timing. The peak must still allow enough repetitions for feedback to matter.

What may change during the session

  • The group may move along the beach to a cleaner inside zone.
  • The lesson may remain in whitewater instead of moving to a green peak.
  • A private format may be more appropriate when the surfer needs close support.
  • A stronger set or current can end use of one section.
  • The session location may change when Dreamland no longer fits the level.

Ocean coaching is adaptive. A plan that changes with conditions is more professional than forcing the original idea after the beach has changed.

What to bring and how to book

Bring practical swimwear, drinking water and personal sun protection. The current website lists swimsuits and reef-safe zinc as available, but confirm what will be supplied for your specific session. Do not assume a board, rash guard, transport or other item unless Hendra confirms it.

Message with your date, number of surfers and honest experience. Keep some flexibility around the final time so the lesson can follow the useful tide and wind window.
