Prepare for a flexible, condition-led first session

Your First Jimbaran Surf Lesson: Inclusions, Pickup and Planning

A Jimbaran lesson begins before you reach the water. Hendra checks whether the sheltered bay has enough suitable swell, confirms practical arrangements and adapts the session to your experience rather than promising one fixed wave.

Before the lesson is confirmed

Start by sharing your level, number of surfers, date and where you are staying. The Jimbaran surf lesson page explains the service direction, while WhatsApp is used to confirm whether the bay or another suitable beach fits the day.

The current website lists two-hour sessions and pickup from Jimbaran or Bingin. Confirm the exact accommodation coverage, timing and meeting arrangement directly. Do not assume an exact map point or transport outside the listed areas.

Arrival and beach assessment

On arrival, the coach observes several complete sets. At Jimbaran this check answers two opposite questions: is there enough wave to learn, and has a rare large swell created an unsuitable shorebreak or backwash?

The selected area should stay clear of active boat traffic, swimmers and rocks near the southern edge. If the bay is flat, the session may move to another South Bali location.

Land-based preparation

Board handling

You learn how to carry and position a large board without pointing it at another person. The leash and fins are checked before entering.

Prone position and paddling

Small changes in chest and hip position affect whether the board glides or pushes water. The coach explains when to start paddling relative to the approaching wave.

Pop-up and stance

The movement is simplified into repeatable steps. Feet, knees and eye line are adjusted to create a balanced stance rather than a one-time jump.

Falling and resurfacing

Safe falling means moving away from the board, protecting the head and checking the area before resurfacing. The learner also practises controlling the board after a ride.

Coaching in the water

A complete beginner usually starts in manageable whitewater. Hendra can steady the board, cue the paddle and give immediate feedback after each attempt. Assistance reduces gradually as the surfer shows control.

A developing beginner may practise catching waves earlier, turning the board independently or taking a slight angle. Progress depends on available wave shape and awareness, not only on how many times the surfer stands.

What is currently confirmed

The public website lists swimsuits and reef-safe zinc as available and mentions practical coaching topics including paddling, pop-up technique, balance, ocean safety and surf etiquette. Treat these as current listed facts and recheck them before publication or booking.

Ask Hendra to confirm equipment, transport and any optional extras for your booking instead of assuming they are included.

Planning pickup and the final meeting point

Pickup convenience is one reason Jimbaran can appeal to travelers staying nearby. Send the accommodation name or full address rather than only the neighbourhood. Hendra can then confirm whether pickup applies, the collection time and whether you should be ready in a lobby or another practical location.

The surf meeting point can change with the selected wave zone. A pin from an old message may lead to the wrong part of the long bay, so use the final WhatsApp confirmation on the session day. Keep your phone available, allow time for Bali traffic and tell Hendra promptly if your accommodation or group size changes.

After the session

The most useful recap identifies one success and one next skill. A first-time surfer may need a more consistent pop-up; a developing beginner may need earlier paddling or better directional control. The next location can change if Jimbaran no longer receives enough swell.

  • Ask which skill to practise next.
  • Confirm any follow-up session separately.
  • Drink water and use sun protection after the lesson.
  • Do not repeat the session alone if you cannot yet identify the safe zone.
